Aquino announces new assets for Philippine Air Force

President Benigno Aquino III trumpeted his administration's accomplishments in the last four years as he spoke during the 67th founding anniversary of the Philippine Air Force (PAF) at Clark Air Base in Pampanga on Tuesday (July 1).

Among those that Aquino cited were an end in classroom backlog across the country and infrastructure projects like the road connector for the South and North Luzon Expressways and the upgrades in the country's airports.

For the PAF, the chief executive announced that new air assets are coming in.

He said the the government is now awaiting the arrival of 17 more UH-1 helicopters within the year.

The Commander-in-chief also revealed plans to buy eight combat utility vehicles, 2 long range patrol aircraft, six close air support aircraft and a radar system.

He added that two of the 12 FA-50 lead-in fighter jets purchased from South Korea are also expected to arrive next year.

This would mean that the Air Force will finally have fighter jets in action again since the last ones were retired in 2005.

Aquino blamed the sorry state of the country's armed forces to the long years of mismanagement by his predecessors: "Tila ba sinasalamin ng kalagayan ng Air Force ang malubhang estado ng ating lipunan dahil sa baluktot na pamamahala [It seems the dismal state of our Air Force is a reflection of the state of our society languishing from the effects of crooked leadership]," he said.

Air Force Chief Lieutenant General Jeffrey Delgado thanked the President for his efforts and vouched for the PAF's commitment to patrol and defend the country's territorial integrity in disputed waters of the West Philippine Sea.

Aquino said he has two years left in office to show Filipinos what honest leadership can really do for the country. - Solar News Online, from a report by Ina Andolong
