The Confederation of Truckers Association of the Philippines says the modified truck ban of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) from December 13 to 20 will weigh down the economy.
The confederation says truckers keep the wheels of industry turning, and restricting them from roads will delay the delivery of goods
to businesses and consumers.
Truckers and haulers deliver raw materials to be manufactured into finished products, and products coming in from China and other countries to be sold this Christmas season.
MMDA Memorandum Circular No. 16 bans truck in Metro Manila from December 13-20 from 6 am to 10 pm due to a spike in vehicle volume during the holidays.
The modified truck ban prohibits all 6 wheeler trucks or trucks with a gross weight of 4,500 kilograms or more from all roads in Metro Manila.
The truck ban shall be lifted on December 21, and the uniform truck ban hours from 6 am to 10 am and 5 pm to 10 pm everyday except Sundays and holidays will be reinstated.
CTAP is pushing for alternative "truck routes" saying that trucks are not the cause of traffic congestion in the metro.
Trucks are already banned 24 hours on EDSA for three years now and gridlocks still plague EDSA.
CPAT officers added that a truck route should not pass through major roads also plied by public utility vehicles.
The truck ban affects five to six thousand trucks. The penalty for violators is P500.
MMDA Chairman Tolentino says that on the first day the ban went into effect, a total of 85 trucks were apprehended.
Tolentino is pleading with truck associations for support and cooperation.
The MMDA expects the truck ban to help ease traffic in the holidays.
